Hi I am getting a lot of spam user registrations to the site - is there a way to link them to a paywall such as subscription sign up after they verify their account? Or what is the best to stop - looks like the emails are fake but are still getting verified on the backend.

Yes, using premium plugins is also a good option. Additionally, please make sure that registration is disabled in the WordPress/Settings/General section, this enables the back-end registration form and many spam bots detect it.
