I have a client with
products (listing)
events (listing)
wholesalers and branches (vendors)
Products and events have different fields/attributes.
Do you think this might be possible using categories and/or attributes together? Can attributes be linked to only one category?

Yes, you can separate products from events using a category listing: How to add listing categories - HivePress Help Center. When editing an attribute, you can mark any category on the right sidebar, which means that this attribute will be displayed only in this category.
