How to change navigation menu buttons (close and dropdown)

Hi,

is there a way to change the color, the size, or the placement of the close button (the X) in the navigation menu?
The same with the dropdown buttons that appears when menu items have submenus.

The issue is that if I change the color of the menu itself, with most colors those buttons are not visible anymore. Users can’t exit the menu easily. I tried with CSS, but it seems impossible.
