Using 1 account across mutlisite subdomains

  1. I was wondering if this would be possible. I am planning to launch a multisite. One for rental, one for listings. I was wondering if it is possible to use same account across both subdomains? Like if a user signs up on rentalhive subdomain, they should also be logged in (with same account) on listinghive subdomain? I don’t want my users to create 2 separate accounts for the same site.
  2. Can hivepress manage paid plans for same account on a multisite? For example if I have a paid plan on rentalhive subdomain, and a user pays for it. That plan’s benefit should only apply to rentalhive subdomain with its given duration and everything. Then if the same user buys a plan from my other listinghive subdomain, and they pay for that there. That plan should run separately from the rentalhive plan. Will this be possible with hivepress?

Hi @astro,

According to HivePress’s AI:

1. Shared User Accounts Across Subdomains (Multisite):
Yes, if you use a WordPress Multisite installation, all subsites (e.g., rental.yoursite.com and listing.yoursite.com) will share the same user database. This means users only need to register once, and their account will exist across all subsites. However, please note:

  • While the user account is shared, content such as listings, bookings, and paid plans are stored separately for each subsite.
  • Users will not be automatically logged in across all subsites after logging in to one; WordPress Multisite does not provide seamless cross-subdomain login by default. Some additional configuration or third-party plugins may be required to achieve single sign-on behavior.

2. Managing Paid Plans Separately on Each Subsite:
Yes, HivePress manages paid plans (such as Memberships or Paid Listings) on a per-site basis within a multisite network. This means:

  • If a user purchases a paid plan on the rentalhive subdomain, the benefits and duration of that plan will apply only to that subsite.
  • If the same user purchases a different plan on the listinghive subdomain, it will be managed separately and will not affect the plan on the rentalhive subdomain.

Important Notes:

  • HivePress does not guarantee 100% compatibility with WordPress Multisite, but there are no known major issues. Some advanced features or customizations may require additional development.
  • Each subsite will have its own listings, bookings, and plan management. Users will not have to create separate accounts, but they may need to log in separately on each subdomain unless you implement a single sign-on solution.
  • If you need advanced integration or custom user flows, you may need to hire a developer familiar with WordPress Multisite and HivePress.

I hope this helps!

Cheers,
Chris :victory_hand:

Hi,

  1. Yes, it’s possible to achieve this with WordPress Multisite. Please note that HivePress doesn’t officially support multisite, but there are no known compatibility issues.
  2. As far as we know, multisite installations share user accounts, meaning users can log in across different network sites without creating separate accounts. However, the database is not shared between sites. In your case, it might be easier to manage everything within a single site by creating different top-level categories for bookable and non-bookable listings (you can configure this in HivePress > Settings > Bookings). This approach is usually better for SEO and marketing, as long as the sites are not completely different in niche or target audience.

Hope I helped with your request

Thank you for the quick responses. The thing is, I am creating 2 different subdomains because I want renatalhive to have different theme/plans/content/site-logo than listinghive. One will be for realestate (rentalhive) and the other for classified marketplace (listinghive). Both related to the main domain which is targeted towards a specific city.

I also want to put a search bar on the main domain where a user can input text and the data will fetch from both subdomains.

Lastly, would it be possible to use rentalhive theme for classified listings marketplace? Will it cause any issues with categories, attributes etc? I kind of prefer the look of rentalhive and want user-posted listings to be displayed in rentalhive theme instead of listinghive.

Thank you for the details.

If you also want the common search form and data to be pulled from both sites, we strongly recommend using a single website instead of two separate installations. You can simply create different top-level categories and set category-specific fields if needed.

You can use RentalHive for a classified marketplace. It is also possible to restrict booking categories, so booking features will only appear for the selected categories and will not show for regular classified ads.

This is the best solution because it allows shared data, including user accounts, search input, listing plans, and more. If needed, you can style categories differently or create different landing pages within the same website.

Thank you once again for clarifying. I am now leaning more towards using a single website and creating top-level categories within it. I have 2 new questions however (sorry I am asking a lot :smiling_face_with_tear:).

  1. I want all the users to post for free (both marketplace and realestate listings). However, I want it so that users can (a) post unlimited listings on marketplace but the listings will expire after 15 days. If they want they can optionally buy a plan which will give them featured listings and 30 days expiry. And for real estate (b) I want users to post only 1 free listing which will expire after 30 days, and they can optionally buy a plan (different from marketplace listings plan) where they will then be able to post unlimited real estate listings with 60 days expiry. I also want to add another category (c) where users can post their business. For that, the user just needs to create an account and can only post 1 business listing for free which never expires and stays there forever. An optional paid plan for this category will allow users to feature their business for x amount of days.
So, what I am trying to achieve is, user should have 1 account but they should be able to post for free (with conditions explianed above) and if they want paid plan, they can buy the plan for their specific need (listings, realestate, business and so on), or buy multiple plans for each top-level category if they want. It is worth mentioning, I am an existing Hivepress user and I know when a user signs up, they have to pick a free plan first which they can renew every month. I want this to be default for new registered users so they don’t have to renew the free plan over and over again. They should be able to post right after registering but with the above conditions for each top-level category (listings-unlimited listings, realestate-1 listing, business-1 listing etc.). This was the reason why I thought of creating multisite but if it is possible with a single website then that would be great!

  2. On a single-website using RentalHive theme, will I be able to change the site logo for each top-level category? I.e. if a user is browsing real-estate listings, I want the site logo to change to real-estate so that user is aware they’re browsing real-estate version of the site (houses/apartments only). This was another reason why I wanted to go with the multi-site route. I may be able to achieve this with elementor or custom snippets/html/css but would it be possible to achieve this natively on Hivepress/RentalHive?

Thank you
