Expiration for Listing/Vendor Verification

Hi HivePress team,

I’d like to suggest a feature that I think would be very useful for directories that use the verification functionality.

Currently, an administrator can manually verify a listing/vendor from the WordPress dashboard, but as far as I can tell, the verification remains active indefinitely unless it is manually removed.

It would be great if HivePress could add an optional expiration period for verification, similar to how featured listings and listing expiration already work.

For example, when an admin verifies a listing/vendor, there could be an option such as:

Verification Duration

  • Blank - infinite

  • Select a date of expiry

The verification would then automatically expire after the selected period.

I think this would be particularly useful for directories where verification needs to be periodically renewed. For example, a business may be verified today, but the directory may want to require that the business confirms its information again every 6 or 12 months before continuing to display the verified status.

Email Notifications

I also think this feature would work well with two new email notifications:

1. Listing is Verified

When an admin verifies a listing/vendor, the owner would receive an email notifying them that their listing has been successfully verified.

For example:

Your listing has been verified!
Your listing [Listing Name] has been verified and will now display the verification badge.

2. Listing Verification Has Expired

When the verification period ends, the listing owner would receive an email notifying them that their verification has expired.

For example:

Your listing verification has expired
The verification for [Listing Name] has expired. Please contact us or complete the verification process again to have your listing verified.

Ideally, these emails would also be available as standard HivePress email templates so administrators could customize the subject and content just like the existing HivePress emails.

Why I think this would be useful

The current verification system works well for permanent verification, but adding an expiration option would make it much more useful for directories that want to ensure listings remain legitimate and up to date.

It would also fit nicely with HivePress’s existing approach to listing expiration and featured listing expiration, while giving directory owners more control over how long a verification badge/status remains valid.

It would be great if you could consider adding this functionality in a future HivePress update.

Hey @astro,

I just wanted to add my support for this idea and think it would be a neat little addition to help encourage Vendors to keep their profiles up-to-date, rather than having them setting them up as a once-and-done (and forgotten about) kind of thing!

Hey @astro,

As promised, here is a temporary solution until the HivePress team decide whether to add this to core: Verification Expiry for HivePress :white_check_mark::stopwatch::tada:

It covers what you described, from the vendor’s side. An admin can set a verification period or a date of their own on each Vendor, or set a site-wide default, and the verified status is removed automatically when the date passes.

The vendor gets your two emails, one when they are verified and one when it expires, plus a reminder a set number of days beforehand, and all three are editable under HivePress > Emails like the standard ones.

There’s also an option to sync Listing verification badges with a Vendor’s verification badge, since HivePress keeps the two separate.

Thank you for putting this together! It’s great to see you turn another feature idea from the community into an actual working plugin. I truly appreciate you taking the time to build these extensions for the community.

I tested the Verification Expiry extension, and it works really well for Vendor verification. One thing I noticed, though, is that the expiry currently applies to Vendor verification, but not to individual Listing verification.

Since HivePress has separate verification checkboxes for Vendors and Listings, I think it would be fantastic if a future update could also support expiry for Listing verification.

For example, when an admin verifies an individual listing, they could select the verification period/date just like with Vendor verification. The listing’s Verified badge would then automatically be removed when that period expires.

The optional Vendor > Listing sync you already added is great, but I think having the ability to manage Listing verification independently would be especially useful for directories where individual listings need to be reviewed periodically.

It would also be great if the email notifications could apply to Listing verification as well. So, in addition to the Vendor verification emails you already have, the listing owner could receive notifications when:

  • Their listing is verified

  • Their listing verification is approaching expiry

  • Their listing verification has expired

I think adding these would make the extension even more complete.

This is now in Verification Expiry for HivePress 1.2.0: Verification Expiry for HivePress

Each Listing’s own Verified box now has its own Verification Period and Verified Until date, with a separate site default for Listings, and the badge is removed automatically on the day after the date. The Listing’s owner gets the three emails you listed: when the Listing is verified, when the date is approaching, and when the badge has been removed. All three are editable under HivePress > Emails, and the Listings screen has a Verification column and bulk actions so you can put a period on Listings you verified before installing it.

It works with Badges to Expire set to “Vendor badge only”, which is the default. The sync option is still there for anyone who would rather have every Listing badge follow its Vendor’s.

Thanks again for the quick update!! I tested the new version, and I think the addition of Listing verification expiry and the related emails makes the extension much more complete.
